Understanding Romans 5 v 8

"God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

God

One day two men met at a science fair. One was a Christian who believed in God; the other was an atheist who denied the existence of God. They were viewing a science project showing the planets in their respective orbits revolving around the sun. The project had been well done. The two stood there watching the movements of the planets. The man who denied the existence of God asked, "Who made this model?" To prove a point, the other answered, "No one; it just happened." "What do you mean by that?" questioned the atheist and added, "Someone very talented had to have made this model!" The Christian replied, "You believe someone made this model; how then can you believe that the real universe just happened, and that it had no real Maker? Just as it is obvious that this project had a maker, it is all the more obvious that the universe had a Maker."

The DIVINE MAKER is GOD. God takes no time in His Word, the Bible, to try and explain that He is GOD. God states in Psalm 53:1 "The fool had said in his heart, There is no God." But God...

Commendeth his love toward us

In the Bible we read that "GOD IS LOVE" (1 John 4:8). There are no degrees of love with God, because GOD IS LOVE. It is the divine nature of God to love. Luke 19:41 tells of the Lord Jesus looking over the city of Jerusalem and weeping because the people there had refused His love. In a mattter of days they would be crying out, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Luke 23:21. We see Him in love weeping for them because He knew the judgement that they would soon be facing because of their actions. The Lord love just the same, no matter what the response is of those He loves. In Luke 17:12 we read of the Lord Jesus healing ten men who had leprosy, a dreaded disease of Bible times. The Lord knew that only one would return and thank Him, yet out of love He healed them all. "There is no respect of persons with God." Romans 2:11. He loves all equally. Cultural background, social difference or religious affiliations make no difference to God. We can be so thankful that God commendeth (shows) His love toward us though...

We were yet sinners

God declares all people are sinners. In Romans 3:23 God states "All have sinned," and in Romans 3:12, "...there is non that does good, no not one." God says in Romans 3:19, "...that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may become guilty before God." Therefore, church attendance, good works, keeping the law, baptism, etc. are useless attempts at obtaining favour with God. We read in Romans 5:12, "Death (judgement) passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." Are you aware of what this sentence of judgement means to you? Speaking of heaven, Revelation 21:27 says, "And there shall in no wise (never, never) enter into it anything that defileth." Revelation 20:15 foretells the tragic destiny of any person dying in his sins. "And whosoever was not found written the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." The sentence of judgement closes the door of heaven to all, but

Christ died for us.

This is the good news, the Gospel, that the Lord Jesus Christ after His resurrection told His followers to proclaim (Mark 16:15). See Sowers wants to proclaim the same message. "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." Think how God displayed His love toward us. His holiness demanded punishment for sin, but His love for us brought death (punishment) to His sinless Son, the Lord Jesus. Although we were sinners and "condemned already" (John 3:18), the Son of God was sent from heaven to die on the cross for us. Paul the Apostle realised this, and in Galatians 2:20 wrote, "...the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." The words of this Christian hymn put it so well:

God love the world of sinners lost
and ruined by the fall;
Salvation now at highest cost,
He offers free to all.

However, the fact that Christ died does no mean that all will be in heaven. Only those who repent of their sin and believe the Gospel message will be saved. John 3:36 emphasizes the need for believing or trusting. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." To believe means to trust. Believing takes place at the moment an individual, conscious of his sinful condition before God, trusts or places faith in Christ's death. He realises that when Christ died for sinners, He died for him personally. As you read this then, will you accept that when the Lord Jesus Christ was punished by God on the cross, it was for your sin? Will you believe that when Christ died for the ungodly, He died for you? If you will, the Lord Jesus promises to give you the assurance of eternal life in Him. This new life will never, and can never, be taken away. In John 10:28 Christ says, "I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand."

Our prayer is that you will trust Christ for the firgiveness of your sins and that we will meet you in Heaven.
